Background

Evergrande, once China's premier property developer, defaulted on most of its $300 billion liabilities since 2021, emblematic of a crisis in China's property sector. Hui pleaded guilty in April to eight charges including fraud and misuse of funds. The court also fined Evergrande Group 8.82 billion yuan and its subsidiary 7 billion yuan.
