US oil reserve hits 44-year low

Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.

The gist

U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve fell to 286.6 million barrels, a 44-year low. The drawdown leaves less cushion against supply shocks and fuels pump-price politics.

Background

The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) was created in 1975 as an emergency stockpile. It has been drawn down heavily since the start of the Iran war to offset supply disruptions, with releases totaling about 128 million barrels. The reserve now holds about 40% of its capacity, the lowest since 1982, amid a global energy shortage and gasoline prices above $4 a gallon.

How it unfolded

  1. recentlyThe SPR dropped below 300 million barrels for the first time since the 1980s, reaching about 289.7 million barrels at the end of August.
  2. Aug 28, 2026The reserve shrank by more than 3 million barrels over the week, leaving the stockpile at 286.6 million barrels, according to DOE data.
  3. Sep 2, 2026The SPR is near its lowest level in 44 years and still being drawn down, with the EIA report due and Hormuz mine strikes tightening supply.
