1. 2013 model yearFederal regulation 49 CFR Part 563 began requiring every passenger vehicle sold in the U.S. with an event data recorder to capture a standard set of data when a crash trigger fires.
2. 2023Mozilla Foundation researchers spent months examining major car companies' privacy policies; study author Jen Caltrider said every single one had "horrible privacy and security."
3. 2024The New York Times published an investigation in which some drivers said their insurance rates went up as a result of the data collection.
