Car data sold to third parties
The gist
The FTC hit GM with a five-year ban on selling driver data to brokers and insurers.
Your car logs your driving and shares it, with controls hard to find.
How it unfolded
- 1996GM launched OnStar on select Cadillac models, a cellular unit and GPS antenna designed to alert emergency services after crashes and provide concierge services. OBD-II, a standardized port that lets authorized systems read a car's internal sensor data, became mandatory on all U.S. vehicles.
- 1997Mercedes-Benz followed with TeleAid.
- 1998BMW followed with Assist.
