Fortnite server downtime
Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.
The gist
Fortnite servers went offline at 4 AM ET on October 15 for the v42.40 update.
It is the last patch before Chapter 7's final season.
Background
Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, nicknamed "Override," began August 19-20, 2026 and is scheduled to close around October 31 to November 1, 2026, a runtime of roughly 72 to 74 days. The October 15 v42.40 update marks the halfway point of Epic's annual Fortnitemares Halloween event and is the last update before the transition into the final season of Chapter 7 next month. Epic disables matchmaking about 30 minutes before servers go offline, and all modes — Battle Royale, Zero Build, Reload, Horde Rush and LEGO Fortnite — are unavailable during maintenance.

Who’s saying what

Still unverified
Leaker Shiina's report of a new story moment in the update; a widely reported anime-themed mini-season with One Piece taking center stage; an expected Yeat collaboration bringing the artist into Fortnite Festival; Hazbin Hotel skins (Charlie Morningstar, Vaggie, Alastor) named in Epic's Fortnitemares announcement but with no confirmed date, making October 15 the most likely launch window; Epic's silence on the next season's date or name, with conflicting guesses of a short mini-season on November 1 or a full chapter reset in late November or December; and whether all reported problems stem from the update.
