LeBron James debuts for 76ers against champion Knicks on opening night
Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.
The gist
LeBron James makes his Philadelphia debut as the 76ers open at the Knicks, who raise their title banner.
The game tests whether Philadelphia's rebuilt superteam can close the gap on the champions.
Background
LeBron James, the 76ers forward entering his record-setting 24th NBA season, joined Philadelphia in a major offseason overhaul that also added Jaylen Brown, after the Knicks swept the 76ers out of the playoffs. The Knicks are the reigning NBA champions and open at home with a ring ceremony; their title run came from a roster built over several years around depth and a team-first mentality, which previews contrast with Philadelphia's superteam approach. The matchup is framed as an early measuring stick for the new-look 76ers.
