Rockstar Games' UK staff vote on union as GTA VI nears launch

Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.

The gist

Rockstar Games' UK workers began a union recognition vote slated for November 12-26, covering over 1,600 staff.
The vote brackets the November 19 launch of GTA VI, the studio's biggest release.

Background

Rockstar Games is the New York-headquartered publisher behind the Grand Theft Auto series and a label of Take-Two Interactive Software, which answers to Wall Street for its numbers. It has over 4,700 staff in 12 locations worldwide, much of that workforce spent recent years on GTA VI, led from Edinburgh, Scotland. The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) is organizing at Rockstar's UK studios; organizers say the terms of the recognition vote were agreed by workers and management. The vote comes as Rockstar's management faces an ongoing employment tribunal in Scotland over last year's firing of more than 30 workers who had been members of a union-related Discord.

Who’s saying what

Party
IWGB organizers say a successful vote would create "the biggest recognised union in the U.K. games sector" and give workers a say over pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working and generative AI policies.
Official
Rockstar said in June it strives to make the best games by giving teams world-class work environments and ongoing career opportunities, and that employee retention is well above the industry standard.
Caution
Rockstar denied workers were illegally sacked for union activity and accused them of gross misconduct, saying the dismissals were over potential security breaches.

Still unverified

A PC version in the first quarter of 2027 is a rumor from GamesBeat citing four anonymous sources; Rockstar has not commented. The 210 GB download figure comes from PlayStation Store data reported by third-party sites, with a day-one patch not yet quantified. The authenticity of the Cyberleek footage has been neither confirmed nor denied by Rockstar.
