Wanted to download an ISO, ended up writing a kernel exploit

The gist

A blogger traced a failed NixOS ISO download to a DMA cache bug in a TP-Link EAP770 v1 access point.
The fix is two sysfs writes, but TP-Link's locked shell blocks them.

How it unfolded

  1. Aug 2023Author bought a TP-Link EAP770 v1 Wi-Fi 7 access point; the connection was janky and video occasionally buffered.
  2. Sep 2024The Wi-Fi 7 standard was finalized; the EAP770 has no Wi-Fi Alliance certification.
  3. 2025Author noticed the EAP770 was still on its original firmware while other devices got updates.
