Developers report macOS 15.8.2 breaks OpenGL window rendering
Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.
The gist
A developer reports macOS 15.8.2's release candidate leaves OpenGL windows with no framebuffer, rendering them blank.
The breakage hits open-source games and apps.
Background
Apple is the maker of macOS, and its Apple Developer Forums host the original bug report. The poster, gongty, filed feedback FB25133383 with a minimal sample, kernel log and call trace after updating a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) from macOS 15.8 to the 15.8.2 release candidate (24H219). Apple marked its OpenGL subsystem (a graphics programming interface) as deprecated back in 2018 with macOS 10.14 Mojave and iOS 12, and the issue surfaced in what users describe as a point release.
How it unfolded
- date unknownA developer reports that after updating a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) to the macOS 15.8.2 release candidate (24H219), every OpenGL context attached to a window has no default framebuffer; NSOpenGLView and -[NSOpenGLContext setView:] are affected and windows render blank. Feedback is filed as FB25133383.
- date unknownThe reporter lists public reports with the same symptom on 24H219 in kitty, Alacritty, Godot and Bambu Studio, covering M1, M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max; the Alacritty report says 15.8.1 was fine.
- date unknownA MacRumors forum poster reports that after updating from 15.8.1 to 15.8.2, several open-source games (0AD, Armegetron, Oolite) show blank black or white screens; one was fixed by switching its config to Vulkan instead of OpenGL.
- Oct 12, 2026A Kicad forum post reports that macOS 15.8.2 broke OpenGL, with users unable to get a framebuffer and several people already reporting the problem to Apple.
- Oct 18, 2026Cosmic Rundown publishes an article stating macOS 15.8.2 broke OpenGL for developers, citing the Apple Developer Forums thread.
Who’s saying what
- Developer
- The reporting developer says kCGLCPHasDrawable is 0, glCheckFramebufferStatus returns GL_FRAMEBUFFER_UNDEFINED and CGLSetSurface returns kCGLBadDrawable, while offscreen FBOs and CAOpenGLLayer/NSOpenGLLayer still render correctly.
- Caution
- MacRumors poster benwiggy says it is unusual for a minor revision at this late stage to be more than a security patch, and that the cause is something in the OS.
- Skeptics
- A Hacker News commenter notes 15.8.2 was not released at the time and the report came from the developer forums, where people are supposed to report such bugs.
- Analysts
- A Hacker News commenter says bugs reported during a beta regularly do not get fixed until the next major release.
Still unverified
Whether the issue is known in the 15.8.2 release candidate and will be fixed before 15.8.2 ships, and whether it appears on the macOS 26.7.2 RC or 27.2 beta, are open questions posed by the reporting developer. A Hacker News commenter states 15.8.2 isn't released, while other sources describe 15.8.2 as an update users installed.
