ICE agents break US citizen's arm in California

The gist

ICE agents detained Long Beach resident Ricardo Gonzalez, who was hospitalized; the mayor filed a DHS complaint.
California officials are calling for an investigation into the encounter.

How it unfolded

  1. Oct 17, 2026Gonzalez was detained by ICE agents in North Long Beach near Locust Avenue and Ellis Street and was hospitalized after the encounter. Long Beach police said ICE requested emergency assistance "due to vehicle vandalism taking place and a subject in need of medical aid" and found a man handcuffed and bleeding amid a "large group disturbance."
  2. Oct 17, 2026Police took Gonzalez to a nearby fire station where his handcuffs were removed, and fire personnel transported him to a hospital. After police left, some ICE agents followed officers to the station's parking lot, where they were asked to leave and told they could file a vandalism report.
  3. Oct 18, 2026Rep. Robert Garcia said in a post on X that ICE agents "brutally attacked and broke the arm" of a North Long Beach resident and U.S. citizen. Mayor Richardson told CNN he spoke with Gonzalez and his family, and Gonzalez told him he is a US citizen.
