MicroG, a free reimplementation of Google Play Services, resurfaces on Hacker News

Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.

The gist

A Hacker News link to MicroG, a free Play Services reimplementation, drew 14 points in two hours.
It lets apps built for Google's framework run on de-Googled Android ROMs like LineageOS.

Background

MicroG is a project, published on GitHub, that offers GmsCore, a free software reimplementation of Google's proprietary Play Services. It is aimed at AOSP-based ROMs (custom Android builds not tied to Google) such as LineageOS, letting apps that call Google's APIs run without the non-free GApps package. The project's wiki says a full setup also needs signature spoofing (a system tweak that lets GmsCore pose as the official Play Services to apps) and a Play Store replacement such as microG Companion. The topic resurfaced in mid-October 2026 through a Hacker News submission and a LavX News article by Sofia Ricci.

Who’s saying what

Official
The microG wiki says GmsCore is a free replacement for non-free Google Play Services, but notes apps may still use proprietary libraries to talk to it, and asks users not to contact third-party app authors about microG issues.
Analysts
LavX News's Sofia Ricci writes that GmsCore requires Android signature spoofing and must be paired with a Play Store replacement for a complete setup.
