The gist
US first lady Melania Trump says she brokered a localized Russia-Ukraine ceasefire in Oleshky, starting October 29.
The truce would let residents evacuate to either side and bring in aid.
Background
Melania Trump is the US first lady, a 56-year-old Slovenian-born former model who has pursued a parallel diplomatic track on Ukraine since October 2025, when she announced a channel of communication with Vladimir Putin. Helping children in conflict is a signature issue for her: she hosted a UN Security Council meeting on it and personally wrote to Putin about reuniting displaced children with their families. Oleshky, in Ukraine's Kherson region, was occupied by Russia on the first day of the full-scale invasion in 2022, and the 2023 destruction of the nearby Kakhovka Dam flooded an estimated 90 percent of its territory. The announcement comes as President Donald Trump pursues a full end to the war with a pivot to Moscow that has alarmed Kyiv.

Still unverified
It is unclear exactly how long the ceasefire is set to last. Melania Trump's office estimates 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in Oleshky, including about 50 children, but there has been no formal demographic count since 2022, and Russian authorities do not permit independent media to enter the city. Her office also said she has helped reunify more than 30 children (34, per her office) separated from their parents by the war.
