Nevada law delays election results until last voter in line votes
The gist
Nevada cannot release results until everyone in line by the 7 p.m. deadline has voted.
The rule explains why the swing state's counts run later than most.
How it unfolded
- Nov 5, 2024Nevada results were not released until 10 p.m. in the general election, largely because of long lines in Washoe and Nye counties where voters were still casting ballots after 9 p.m. A large batch at 10:30 p.m. brought reporting to 69%, and by 2:30 a.m. the next morning 86.5% were released.
- Nov 6, 2024First results were reported starting at 12:54 a.m. ET, about three hours after polls closed; the state reached 50% reporting at 1:02 a.m. ET and 90% at 8:26 p.m. ET that day.
- Nov 3, 2026Polls close at 7 p.m. local time, but state law keeps polls open until everyone in line by then has voted. Initial results were expected between 8 and 9 p.m., with the first update in Clark and Washoe counties typically including all early in-person results and partial mail results.
