UN says climate funding for poorer countries stalled
The gist
UNEP's 2026 Adaptation Gap Report says developing countries need about $305 billion a year by 2035.
Even tripling current public finance would cover at most 29% of that need.
How it unfolded
- 2024International public adaptation finance reached $28.2–31.7 billion, only about a billion dollars more than the previous year.
- Nov 2025At the COP30 summit in Belém, countries agreed the Global Mutirão call to at least treble adaptation finance by 2035.
- Nov 3, 2026COP31 President-Designate Murat Kurum cited a global adaptation finance gap of $5.6–7.1 trillion, the cumulative cost developing countries face to implement their climate plans by 2030.
