Tesla to end Cybertruck production in 2027
The gist
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production around mid-2027.
The truck sold in the tens of thousands, far short of Musk's 250,000-a-year goal.
How it unfolded
- 2019Tesla announces the Cybertruck; at the reveal, head designer Franz von Holzhausen cracks its windows with steel balls. Tesla said it was supposed to start under $40,000 with up to 500 miles of range.
- Late 2023Tesla hands the first few Cybertrucks to customers; the base price had risen to around $60,000 and top-end range had shrunk by over 100 miles.
- 2024First full year of sales; Musk becomes a major financial backer of Donald Trump, making the Cybertruck a target for protesters.
