Ubuntu 26.04 Rust sudo incompatible with standard sudo
The gist
Blogger Chris Siebenmann found Ubuntu 26.04's Rust sudo ignores some sudoers wildcard rules standard sudo accepts.
The gap can silently widen passwordless access, so admins should check sudoers files.
How it unfolded
- May 8, 2025It was reported that Ubuntu 25.10 would switch to sudo-rs, a Rust-based, memory-safe implementation of sudo and su.
- Mar 26, 2026Ubuntu 26.04 ships sudo-rs as the default sudo; both sudo-rs and traditional sudo are installed, with update-alternatives controlling which is active.
- Apr 28, 2026Ubuntu 26.04 LTS "Resolute Raccoon" makes sudo-rs the default sudo provider.
