North Carolina GOP implosion analysis
Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.
The gist
North Carolina Democrats flipped 18 state House seats and took the chamber majority in the midterms.
A recount will decide whether Democrats control the full legislature.
Background
North Carolina Republicans had controlled the General Assembly for 15 years and redrew the state's election maps in 2023 to favor the GOP in many districts. In the 2026 midterms, Democrats flipped 18 state House seats and multiple congressional seats, and networks called the Senate race for Roy Cooper, the former governor and Democratic candidate — the first Democrat sent to the Senate from the state since 2009. The losses came as midterms historically favor the party out of the White House, and polls consistently found most voters unhappy with President Donald Trump's handling of the economy, per WRAL. State GOP chair Jason Simmons called the results "disappointing" and said the party would "take an honest look" at them.

- Nov 4, 2026Sen. Thom Tillis blamed the president's efforts to redraw electoral maps in some states for the Republican Party's midterm failures.

Still unverified
Whether Democrats take control of the full legislature depends on a recount expected in rural counties along the state's southern border; the GOP keeps its state Senate majority only if Sen. Danny Britt wins, and he led by about 245 votes with more than 650 provisional ballots left to count. A Reddit post also said Reps. Greg Murphy, Virginia Foxx and David Rouzer "may" have lost.
