California's Great America to close in 2027
The gist
Six Flags announced California's Great America will close for good on Labor Day, Sept. 6, 2027.
The Santa Clara park ends after five decades, leaving the South Bay without a major theme park.
How it unfolded
- 2022Prologis paid $310 million for the land beneath the park and leased it back to then-owner Cedar Fair, with the lease running through June 2028 plus an option to extend up to five years.
- 2024Six Flags and Cedar Fair merged, and the park's originally planned 2033 closure date was moved up in part due to the expiring lease.
- Jun 2025Six Flags said the park would close after the 2027 season unless the company extended its lease, which is set to expire June 20, 2028.
