Trump's D.C. construction blitz faces new hurdles

The gist

Judge Tanya Chutkan ordered a 14-day pause on construction of Trump's 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
D.C. and Virginia call the arch illegal; courts and Congress now hold its fate.

How it unfolded

  1. May 2026The entirely Trump-appointed Commission for Fine Arts approved the arch's design, which was still incomplete at the time.
  2. Sep 2026A federal council packed with Trump allies abruptly terminated a historic preservation review that participants had already criticized as rushed. The FAA said the arch would not pose an airspace hazard as long as it is continuously lit a certain way.
  3. Oct 31, 2026D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb and Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones filed a 45-page lawsuit in federal court in D.C. to block the arch, calling it "flagrantly unlawful."
