The gist

Microsoft confirmed Xbox cloud gaming will be capped at 5-15 monthly hours from November 2026.
The limits end years of unlimited-play marketing and affect an estimated 4% of users.

Background

Game Pass spent five years selling itself on unlimited access, with cloud streaming letting that promise follow players onto phones, tablets and browsers without a console. In 2026 every major cloud gaming platform rewrote its business model almost in sequence: NVIDIA capped GeForce Now at 100 hours in January, Amazon killed the Luna game store in April and cut off purchased Luna titles in June, and Microsoft cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99. Microsoft confirmed in early September 2026 that cloud play would be metered, giving subscribers roughly two months of notice before the caps take effect in November.

  8. Sep 21, 2026Microsoft confirmed the policy shift: Game Pass Ultimate subscribers get 15 hours of cloud play a month, Premium 10 and Essential 5, starting in November 2026; add-on hours will be purchasable through the Xbox Store.

Who’s saying what

Official
Microsoft confirmed the caps and said add-on hours will be purchasable through the Xbox Store, but has not disclosed pricing, whether hours are sold individually or in blocks, or whether unused hours roll over.
Analysts
Coverage frames the move as the end of Game Pass's five-year unlimited-access pitch, with the three big cloud platforms no longer competing on the same terms.
Caution
Reporting notes the stacked September lineup arrives just as Microsoft starts changing the benefits that made the subscription appealing, and that the November caps will put that slate to the test.

Still unverified

A leak claiming Microsoft will strip day-one releases out of Game Pass starting in 2027, split cloud streaming into a paid add-on and introduce an ad-supported tier traces to an anonymous ResetEra poster known as Slayven and was amplified by outlets including VICE, GAMINGbible, Notebookcheck, Sportskeeda Tech and tbreak.com. Microsoft has not confirmed any of it; every outlet reporting the figures flagged them as an unverified leak, and Microsoft said it has no changes to announce and no finalized plans.
