Teacher and boy die in Iowa lake on field trip

- Sep 22, 2026Around noon, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of people in the water at the Coralville Lake spillway in the MacBride Nature Recreation Area. Teacher Hannah Jorgensen, 24, was recovered from Lake Macbride at 12:43 p.m. and pronounced dead at the scene; deputies could not find 10-year-old Ahmed Osman and paused the search overnight.
- Sep 23, 2026Ahmed Osman's body was found Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. at the Coralville Reservoir. The sheriff's office issued a statement that night announcing both deaths.
- Sep 24, 2026The Iowa City Community School District confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post, saying it was "shattered by the loss." The University of Iowa placed the School of the Wild program on hiatus.
