Background
Gea, 21, born in Carpentras in 2005, had been showing promise for several seasons. His 2026 season already included a first ATP title in Los Cabos and a US Open fourth round as a lucky loser. In Shanghai he beat a top-10 player for the first time, then followed it with a win over world No. 15 Jakub Mensik to reach the quarterfinals on his debut.
