Roku moves developer repos to GitLab

Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.

The gist

Roku completed migrating its developer docs, sample apps and RSG 2.0 SDK tooling from GitHub to GitLab.
Developers with bookmarked URLs, git remotes or pipelines must update them.

Background

Roku is the company behind the RSG 2.0 SDK (its software kit for building apps on Roku devices). It moved its developer documentation, sample apps, tooling repositories and open-source software to a single central location at gitlab.com/rokudev, saying the impact on developers is minimal. The migration matters now because links in Roku's docs and blog posts were updated, but any bookmarked or stored repository URLs still point to the old GitHub addresses.

How it unfolded

  1. Oct 15, 2026Roku completed migrating all developer resources from GitHub to GitLab, covering documentation, sample apps, tooling repositories and open-source software for the RSG 2.0 SDK, consolidated at gitlab.com/rokudev.
  2. Oct 15, 2026Repository names stayed the same, so a repository at github.com/rokudev/<repo> now lives at gitlab.com/rokudev/<repo>.
  3. Oct 24, 2026LavX News published an article on the migration, and the Instagram account Tech Daily 24/7 posted about it.

Who’s saying what

Official
Roku's developer blog says the move consolidates resources into a single central location and the impact to developers is minimal, though bookmarked or stored repository URLs need updating.
Caution
LavX News's Marta Kowalska writes that the impact is small for anyone using official links, but a stale index produces no error and quietly returns outdated content.

Still unverified

The claim that a stale index does not raise an error but quietly serves outdated content is stated by Roku's blog and LavX News but is not independently confirmed.
