Saudi coalition intercepts Houthi missile targeting Medina
Archived — this story has rotated out of today’s deck. It is kept here in full.
The gist
Saudi-led coalition said its air defense destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Yemen's Houthis toward the Medina region.
The Houthis have denied targeting Mecca and Medina, so the claim is contested.
Background
The Saudi-led coalition (formally the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen) is a military alliance supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government against the Houthis, a Yemen-based group that seized the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country in 2014. Saudi Arabia has led the coalition against the Houthis since March 2015. The Houthis have attacked airports, energy infrastructure and military sites in the kingdom, and have repeatedly targeted the Red Sea port of Yanbu in recent months; Yanbu is the terminus of the East-West Pipeline that lets Saudi oil bypass the Strait of Hormuz. The interception comes amid a run of reported aerial attacks on the kingdom in recent weeks.
